Mono County's sign regulations are in Chapter 07 of the General Plan. Section 07.060(8) lists as prohibited 'Signs that advertise a home occupation, unless permitted by Expanded Home Occupation permit.' This is consistent with the home-occupation standards in Section 04.290, which require that the business 'produce no evidence of its existence in the external appearance of the dwelling or premises' and 'involve no outdoor storage or advertising.' For residential identification generally, Section 07.020(7) permits a private residence sign 'limited to the names of the occupants and a total of 2 sq. ft. in size,' and multifamily projects of four or more units may have one permanent identification sign up to 20 sq. ft. on an approved wall or facade. Temporary residential signs such as garage-sale and open-house signs are permitted up to 3 sq. ft. and only in connection with the event (Section 07.020(9)). The general sign code also caps sign height at 20 feet (Section 07.060(1)), but that ceiling is far above anything a residence would use. The practical result: a typical home business in the unincorporated county cannot post a commercial sign at all; only an Expanded Home Occupation Permit, approved by the Planning Commission, can authorize home-occupation signage.
Posting a home-occupation advertising sign without an Expanded Home Occupation Permit violates Sign Code Section 07.060(8) and the home-occupation standards in Section 04.290, and can result in removal orders and code-compliance enforcement.
