Sierra County's zoning code defines sign categories such as informational, directional, and advertising signs, but does not publish a separate home-occupation sign-size table. Signs for a home business in unincorporated areas are governed by the sign definitions in the zoning code and the conditions of any use permit.
Sierra County's zoning definitions in Sierra County Code section 15.08.200 establish the framework for signs. A 'sign' is broadly defined as anything placed, erected, or made visible for outdoor informational or advertising purposes, and for a double-faced sign the gross surface area of both sides is counted toward advertising area. The code distinguishes among sign types: an 'informational sign' is limited to identifying the operator and the name of the product, service, or facility available on the premises (located on-site or within 100 feet); a 'directional sign' gives directions to a community or public place; and an 'advertising sign' is generally a remotely located, off-premises sign. The zoning code does not set a dedicated home-occupation sign square-footage limit; for a home business approved as a conditional use, any signage is typically governed by the conditions of the use permit and the on-premises informational-sign concept. Off-premises advertising signs are treated more restrictively under the advertising-sign definition. Because there is no standalone numeric home-occupation sign standard in the County code, applicants should confirm allowable signage with the Planning Department when seeking a use permit. The County administers signage rules throughout the unincorporated area.
Installing a prohibited off-premises advertising sign, or signage exceeding use-permit conditions, can be addressed through zoning enforcement and nuisance abatement under Sierra County Code Chapter 1.17.
