Lewisville, TX Home Business: Zoning Restrictions (2026)

Lewisville Code of Ordinances Chapter 14 (Zoning) allows home occupations as an accessory use in residential zoning districts. A home occupation must be conducted entirely within the dwelling unit or an attached garage and must be clearly incidental and secondary to the residential use of the property. The business must not change the external appearance of the residence or generate noise, odor, vibration, glare, or electrical interference detectable beyond the property line. No more than 25 percent of the total floor area of the dwelling may be devoted to the home occupation. The business must be conducted solely by residents of the dwelling; no non-resident employees may report to the home for work. Customer, client, or patient visits are generally not permitted or are limited to minimal traffic that does not exceed what is normal for the neighborhood. Deliveries must be by standard residential carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) and not by commercial freight vehicles. Prohibited home occupations typically include auto repair, welding, commercial food preparation beyond cottage food law limits, and any use requiring hazardous materials storage. A home occupation permit or registration may be required through the planning department.
