Denton Development Code Subchapter 5 Table 5.2-A governs home occupations by zoning district. Home businesses must be clearly incidental to the residential use, conducted entirely within the dwelling, and must not alter the residential character of the property. No external signage, outdoor storage, or visible evidence of business activity is permitted.
The Denton Development Code Subchapter 5 regulates home occupations as an accessory use in residential zoning districts. Table 5.2-A lists home occupations as a permitted accessory use in single-family residential (RS), multifamily (MF), and mixed-use zones. The home occupation must be conducted entirely within the dwelling and must be clearly secondary and incidental to the primary residential use. The business may not occupy more than 25 percent of the total floor area of the dwelling. No external evidence of the home occupation is permitted, including signage, outdoor storage of materials or inventory, window displays, or alteration of the exterior appearance. Only residents of the dwelling may be employed in the home occupation; no outside employees may report to the home for work. The home occupation must not generate noise, odor, vibration, smoke, dust, glare, or electrical interference detectable beyond the property line. Prohibited home occupations include retail sales with walk-in customers, medical or dental practices, automobile or equipment repair, commercial greenhouses, and animal grooming.
