Denton home occupations must not generate customer, client, or delivery traffic in excess of what is normal for a residential neighborhood. Prohibited home businesses include retail sales, medical practices, and any use generating regular walk-in traffic. Typically no more than 2-3 customer visits per day are tolerated.
Denton Development Code Subchapter 5 requires that home occupations remain clearly incidental to residential use and not alter the residential character of the neighborhood. While the code does not specify an exact daily customer visit limit, the requirement that no external evidence of business activity be visible effectively limits customer traffic to very low volumes, typically 2-3 visits per day at most. Retail sales with walk-in customers are explicitly prohibited. Professional services that receive clients by appointment in small numbers may be permissible, but regular scheduled traffic patterns that are noticeable to neighbors may trigger a code complaint. Home occupation businesses must not create parking congestion on residential streets. Near the UNT and TWU campuses, where street parking is already at a premium, any additional business-related traffic is more likely to generate complaints. Delivery vehicles serving a home business must not block the street or create noise outside of normal delivery hours. Complaints about excess home business traffic are handled by Community Improvement Services through the Denton 311 portal.
