Clumping bamboo (Bambusa, Dendrocalamus, and similar genera) does not spread aggressively and is commonly used in Orange County landscaping without issue. For running bamboo, installation of a root barrier (minimum 24 inches deep, high-density polyethylene) is strongly recommended. HOA communities, which are prevalent in Orange County, may have their own landscaping restrictions that limit or prohibit bamboo.
