Irvine, CA Noise Ordinances: Leaf Blower Rules (2026)

Section 6-8-205(D)(1) bans gas-powered yard equipment on a staggered schedule rather than all at once. Large businesses -- those employing more than 50 people -- had to stop operating or authorizing gas-powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers as of July 1, 2024. Every other business and any individual, including homeowners, followed six months later on January 1, 2025. The same two-step schedule then applies to a second equipment category -- gas-powered string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and edgers -- with large businesses cut off January 1, 2025 and everyone else (all other businesses and any person) cut off July 1, 2026.

Liability for a violation is limited to the landscape business owner or, for equipment used at a private home, the homeowner operating their own machine. The ban carries narrow exceptions: equipment used by or at the direction of emergency responders during an emergency, or necessary to restore or protect life or property from imminent danger, and equipment used to clear downed trees or vegetation for public-safety reasons as authorized by the City. m. Saturday, and stop at least 10 feet from any operable window, door, or air intake. Operators must also complete City-approved training every two years, unless they are a homeowner running a single blower on their own property.
