Irvine, CA Fence Regulations: Retaining Walls (2026)

Irvine's general wall and fence height caps top out at seven feet for most rear and side residential yards, but Sec. 3-35-2.B.1 sets a specific exception where a retaining wall is stacked with a fence or wall: "If a retaining wall is combined with a fence or wall, the total combined height may reach a maximum of 10 feet above grade along the streetside and 12 feet along the rear property lines." That's a meaningful allowance over the standard limit, it recognizes that a slope or grade change often forces a taller combined structure than a flat-lot fence would need.
