Henrico County requires grass and weeds to be kept at or below 12 inches on residential yards, platted subdivision lots, and property near homes. The county governs countywide, since it has no incorporated towns.
Under the Henrico County Weeds and Grass Ordinance (Code Ch. 10, Art. V), grass and weed growth over 12 inches is a violation on any yard of residential property, any lot inside a platted subdivision, and land within 250 feet of residential development. A Community Maintenance inspector first seeks voluntary compliance, contacting the owner by card, brochure, and mail. If the owner misses the deadline, the county may hire a contractor to cut it and bill the owner, with any unpaid bill assessed as a lien on the property tax bill.
Occupied residential owners face a civil penalty up to $100; all other violators up to $250. County cutting costs are billed and become a tax lien if unpaid.
