Greensboro prohibits grass and weeds over 12 inches under Chapter 17 (Nuisances). Owners get 10 days to mow after notice or face fines starting around $300.
Under Greensboro Code of Ordinances Chapter 17 (Nuisances), any dense growth of grass, weeds, or other noxious vegetation over 12 inches in height on private property constitutes a violation. Ornamental grasses chosen for decorative features such as color and form -- including switch grass, pampas grass, fountain grass, and bamboo -- are exempt from the height restriction. When a violation is identified, Code Compliance issues a notice giving the property owner 10 days to mow or otherwise abate the overgrowth. If the owner fails to comply within the notice period, the city may perform the work and assess the cost to the property owner. Violations can be reported by calling 336-373-2111. Repeat violations may lead to escalating enforcement actions.
Initial fines start around $300 and increase depending on the size of the property. If the property owner fails to mow within the 10-day notice period, the city may abate the nuisance and charge the owner for the cost of the work. Repeat offenders face escalating civil penalties.
