Nevada County's Hazardous Vegetation and Combustible Material Abatement Ordinance declares dry grass, weeds, brush, and dead vegetation within 100 feet of structures or along primary ingress-egress roads a public nuisance and requires every owner and occupant in the unincorporated county to abate it.
Nevada County General Code Chapter IV, Article 7 (Sec. G-IV 7.1 through 7.17, Ord. 2477) extends California Public Resources Code Sec. 4291 by requiring defensible space even on parcels adjacent to improved parcels and along emergency access and evacuation routes. Owners must maintain 100 feet of defensible space around structures, a 10-foot roadside strip along primary ingress-egress routes, a 5-foot ember-resistant zone around structures, and 10 feet of clearance around propane tanks, generators, and fuel storage. CAL FIRE, local fire districts, the County Fire Marshal, and Code Compliance enforce the article; a Notice to Abate allows at least 30 days to comply, with appeals due within 10 days.
Infraction fines run $130, $700, then $1,300 for repeats within a year; misdemeanors carry up to $1,000 and six months in jail. The County may abate at the owner's expense and lien the parcel, with treble costs for repeat violations.
