Cook County has significant aircraft operations from O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) airports. FAA preempts local regulation. The O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission manages noise programs for surrounding communities.
O'Hare International Airport is one of the busiest in the world, generating substantial aircraft noise in unincorporated areas and nearby suburbs. Midway Airport also impacts south suburban communities. The O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) monitors noise and manages sound insulation programs. FAA exclusively controls flight paths. Residential sound insulation programs are available for qualifying properties near ORD.
No local authority over aircraft noise. Complaints go to the Chicago Department of Aviation noise hotline (800) 435-9569 or FAA.
