There is no county vehicle-noise ordinance. Allentown requires every motor vehicle to have a working muffler and bans cutouts or bypasses. Idling a stationary vehicle longer than 15 minutes per hour within 150 feet of a residential area is also prohibited.
Vehicle noise on local streets is addressed by municipal ordinance plus the statewide Vehicle Code. Allentown requires every motor vehicle to be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise-suppressing system in good working order and constant operation; no cutout, bypass or similar device that causes a noise disturbance is allowed. A stationary vehicle (or its auxiliary equipment) may not be operated more than fifteen (15) minutes in any hour within 150 feet of a residential area, except in traffic. Horns may be sounded only as a necessary warning while driving. Sound-amplification systems audible off-vehicle are also barred.
Violation ticket $100; unpaid tickets add $25 for days 11–20. Summary conviction $100–$1,000 and/or up to 90 days imprisonment; each day may be a separate offense.
