Grilling rules come from the PA Uniform Construction Code's adoption of the International Fire Code (Section 308.1.4), not from Lehigh County. At apartments and other multifamily buildings, open-flame cooking devices - charcoal or LP-gas grills - may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions apply to one- and two-family dwellings, buildings and decks protected by automatic sprinklers, and LP-gas devices using a container of 1 pound or less. Single-family homeowners are generally free to grill in their own yards, keeping a safe distance from the house and following manufacturer instructions. Allentown enforces the fire code through its Fire Prevention Bureau.
Grilling on a prohibited apartment balcony can be ordered stopped and cited under the fire code, and landlords may bar grills entirely; the griller is liable for any resulting fire damage.
