Residential barbecuing in Davis is allowed and regulated through the California Fire Code adopted in Chapter 13. Grills must be kept clear of combustibles and, at apartments, open-flame grills generally may not be used on combustible balconies. Charcoal barbecues are ordinarily allowed in city parks.
Davis adopts the 2022 California Fire Code in Article 13.01, which governs outdoor cooking and LP-gas. Backyard barbecuing with charcoal or propane is allowed at single-family homes, kept clear of structures, fences, and dry vegetation and supervised while lit. Under California Fire Code Section 308, open-flame and charcoal cooking devices generally may not operate on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments and condominiums unless the building is fully sprinklered; one- and two-family homes are exempt. Barbecue propane cylinders fall under Chapter 61 limits and should not be stored indoors. In city parks, kindling a fire requires a designated fire pit and permit, but this does not restrict ordinary use of commercial charcoal in a barbecue.
Using a charcoal or open-flame grill on a combustible apartment balcony, grilling too close to structures or dry vegetation, or burning non-cooking materials violates the California Fire Code (Section 308). The Davis Fire Department may order it removed.
