Single-family detached homes in Napa may use propane and charcoal grills with manufacturer clearances. California Fire Code Β§308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking on combustible balconies and within 10 feet of combustible multi-family construction, with exceptions for sprinklered buildings and small (1 lb) propane containers.
Napa adopts the California Fire Code through Napa Municipal Code Title 15. CFC Β§308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at multi-family R-2 buildings. Exceptions: (1) buildings or balconies protected by an automatic sprinkler system, (2) LP-gas containers not exceeding 2.5 lb water capacity (about 1 lb propane), or (3) balconies constructed entirely of non-combustible materials. Single-family detached homes (R-3) are not subject to the ban and may use full-size propane grills with manufacturer clearances. During Red Flag fire weather declared for Napa County, the Napa Fire Department may issue temporary open-flame restrictions; BAAQMD also issues Spare the Air alerts affecting wood-burning.
The Napa Fire Marshal can order immediate removal of non-compliant balcony grills, issue administrative citations, and assess re-inspection fees. Landlords can be cited for failing to enforce CFC Β§308.1.4 in common areas. Fires create civil and criminal liability.
