Wichita has adopted the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC) with local amendments under Code Chapter 8.04. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking devices and LP-gas containers over 1 pound on combustible balconies of multi-family buildings without sprinklers. Single-family homes have no LP container size limit. Charcoal grills must be 10 feet from combustible buildings.
Wichita Code Chapter 8.04 incorporates the 2018 IFC. Section 308.1.4 controls open-flame use on balconies and decks. In residential occupancies with three or more dwelling units, charcoal grills and LP-gas containers over 1 pound (water capacity) are prohibited on or within 10 feet of combustible balconies and decks unless the building is protected throughout by an automatic sprinkler system. Single-family detached and duplex homes are exempt from these limits. Wichita Fire Department enforces violations. Propane storage on residential premises is limited to 25 pounds aggregate water capacity under IFC Chapter 61 amendments. Outdoor burning rules under Wichita Code 7.41 and Sedgwick County Air Quality regulations may further restrict open burning during ozone-alert days (typically late spring through summer).
Fire code violations under Chapter 8.04 carry fines up to $1,000 per occurrence. Multi-family LP-gas violations can lead to lease termination by landlords and Fire Marshal stop-use orders. Aggregate-storage violations may trigger hazardous-materials enforcement.
