Most Dutchess County municipalities restrict overnight parking of vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR in residential zones. Poughkeepsie, Beacon, and Fishkill enforce commercial vehicle limits on residential streets.
Dutchess County itself does not regulate on-street parking β authority sits with the City of Poughkeepsie, City of Beacon, and each town and village. The City of Poughkeepsie Code Chapter 15-7 and the City of Beacon Code Chapter 192 both prohibit parking of commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 lbs GVWR (or in some sections, over 8,000 lbs or bearing more than two axles) on residential streets between roughly 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Towns such as East Fishkill, Fishkill, Wappinger, Hyde Park, and LaGrange also bar overnight storage of tractor-trailers, dump trucks, box trucks over the weight threshold, and trailers in residential zoning districts via their zoning codes. Most towns allow one clearly marked service truck (pickup, plumber van, contractor van) parked at the operator's residence if they hold a valid home occupation permit. Signs, lettering, or ladder racks converting a vehicle into advertising are frequently restricted to a maximum size or banned outright. Active loading/unloading is exempt, but parked delivery vehicles idling more than 5 minutes violate NY DEC anti-idling rule 6 NYCRR Β§217-3. Violations start with a parking ticket and can escalate to zoning enforcement for repeat offenders.
Typical Dutchess parking ticket: $25β$100 first offense (Poughkeepsie $50, Beacon $50). Zoning violations for repeated commercial vehicle storage in residential districts: $250β$1,000 per day after written notice. Vehicles may be towed after multiple tickets.
