Driveway and yard parking are zoning matters handled by cities and townships under the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act (MCL 125.3101), not the county. Ann Arbor Code Sec. 5:166(1) provides that no person shall park a motor vehicle in the front open space (the yard in front of the home) except on the driveway, in a structure, or within an approved parking space or lot. Limited exceptions apply for University of Michigan football game days, City-Council-designated special events, and the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair by permit. Trailers, boats and campers likewise must stay off the front open space.
Parking on the front lawn instead of the driveway is a civil infraction under Ann Arbor Chapter 59, subject to a ticket and city-set fine.
