Madison restricts oversized and heavy vehicles in residential zones: any truck, tractor-trailer, bus, or motor vehicle of 1.5 tons or greater may not be left parked there, and RVs, mobile homes, motor homes, boats, and trailers may not be left on residential streets.
There is no single 'oversized vehicle' ordinance; Madison uses weight and vehicle-type limits. Sec. 32-133 bars leaving any truck, tractor-trailer, bus, or vehicle of 1.5 tons or greater parked in residential zones unless actively loading or unloading. Sec. 32-132 bars leaving recreational vehicles, mobile homes, motor homes, boats, or trailers on residential public streets. Large motor carriers are also subject to adopted federal motor carrier safety and safe-loading rules (Sec. 32-63 through 32-65). Oversized vehicles should be kept on private property consistent with the front-yard paving rules of Sec. 32-134.
Violations are municipal offenses under Sec. 1-9 (fine $1 to $500 and/or up to 12 months); each day a violation continues is a separate offense.
