In Madison, fences, walls and planters may reach up to eight feet in interior side and rear yards. Front-yard fences may not exceed 42 inches (3.5 feet) in height. Corner-lot fences must also meet intersection visibility rules.
The City of Madison Zoning Ordinance (Section 5-7-2) allows fences, walls, planters and similar structures up to eight feet high in interior side and rear yards, placed up to the property line, so long as they do not block or divert drainage. Fences on an exterior (street-facing) side must sit at least 15 feet from that property line and still may not exceed eight feet. In the front yard, fences are capped at 42 inches. All fences must also satisfy the Section 4-5 clear-visibility (sight triangle) rules at intersections.
Fences over height or blocking a sight triangle are zoning violations; Code Enforcement can require correction or removal. No fence permit is issued, but the fence must still conform to the Zoning Ordinance.
