Madison lets fences be placed up to the property line in interior side and rear yards. The Zoning Ordinance sets height and drainage rules but does not assign shared-fence cost or maintenance, which are civil matters between neighbors.
Under Zoning Ordinance Section 5-7-2, a fence may be built up to the interior side or rear property line, provided it does not exceed eight feet and does not block or divert drainage onto neighboring land. Madison does not regulate who pays for or maintains a boundary fence, nor does it require a good-neighbor finished side facing out; those are private civil matters governed by Alabama property law. Corner-lot and street-facing placements must respect the Section 4-5 sight triangle. Fences within a recorded easement may be removed by the City without replacement.
Drainage-blocking or over-height boundary fences are zoning violations enforceable by Code Enforcement. Boundary and ownership disputes themselves are resolved through civil courts, not the City.
