Freestanding shade structures under 120 square feet with no utilities may be exempt. Setback requirements apply to all outdoor structures. At-grade patios (concrete, pavers, natural stone) do not typically require permits. In hillside and fire-prone areas, additional engineering and fire-safety requirements may apply to decks. The county's online permit system allows some permit types to be submitted electronically.
