Covered patios (patio covers, pergolas with roofing) attached to the house are considered additions and require building permits. Freestanding shade structures under 120 square feet with no utilities may be exempt. Setback requirements apply to all outdoor structures. At-grade patios (concrete, pavers, natural stone) do not typically require permits. In hillside and fire-prone areas, additional engineering and fire-safety requirements may apply to decks. The county's online permit system allows some permit types to be submitted electronically.
