Fence permits are required in unincorporated Cook County for most fence installations. The Cook County Department of Building and Zoning reviews fence applications for compliance with height limits, setback requirements, material standards, and the zoning ordinance.
The Cook County Department of Building and Zoning requires permits for fence installation in unincorporated areas. Permit applications require a site plan showing the proposed fence location, height, and materials. Residential fence height limits are generally 6 feet in side and rear yards and 4 feet in front yards. The zoning ordinance specifies which materials are acceptable by district. Pool barrier fences must meet the adopted building code (at least 48 inches with self-closing, self-latching gates). Corner lot fences must maintain sight triangles at intersections. Retaining walls that incorporate fences may require engineering review. The permit review process considers setbacks from property lines and public rights-of-way. Electronic plan review is available through the ePermit portal.
Installing a fence without a permit or exceeding height limits results in a violation notice and 30 days to correct. Fines may be imposed through the Cook County Administrative Hearings process.
