Austin allows privacy fences up to 8 feet in rear and side yards. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet if solid, 6 feet if at least 50% open. Fences under 7 feet generally do not require a permit unless in a flood zone.
Austin's Land Development Code and Building Code regulate fence construction. Residential fences not exceeding 7 feet in height generally do not require a building permit, provided they are not in a floodplain or floodway. Fences in flood hazard areas always require a permit. Maximum height is 8 feet in rear and interior side yards. Front yard fences are limited: solid fences up to 4 feet, or fences up to 6 feet if at least 50% open (e.g., wrought iron, picket). Corner lots must maintain a visibility triangle β 25 feet from the corner in each direction, with a maximum fence height of 3 feet in the triangle. Pool barrier fences must be at least 48 inches high with a self-closing, self-latching gate per the International Residential Code. Barbed wire is prohibited in residential zones. Materials must be durable; the finished side should face outward as a courtesy.
Non-compliant fences may receive a notice to correct. Building in a flood zone without a permit: significant fines.
