Miami Beach requires a $20 permit for garage sales, limiting each residential address to one sale per 12 months for a maximum of two consecutive days. Business entities cannot conduct garage sales at residential locations. Items must be displayed on the property without encroaching on sidewalks or rights-of-way.
The City of Miami Beach regulates garage sales through a permitting system administered by the Finance Department. A permit costing $20 must be obtained before conducting a garage sale. Each residential address is limited to one garage sale per 12-month period, and each sale may last a maximum of two consecutive days. No business entity may conduct a garage sale at a place of residence within the city. All merchandise must be displayed on the property and may not encroach into sidewalks, swales, or the public right-of-way. The sale must operate during reasonable hours consistent with residential noise standards. Adequate parking provisions should be made for customers without blocking streets, driveways, or fire lanes. Signage for the garage sale must comply with temporary sign regulations under Chapter 138 and may not be placed on public property, utility poles, or traffic signs. All signs must be removed immediately after the sale concludes. The permit application requires the property address, dates of the sale, and the applicant's contact information.
Conducting a garage sale without a permit or exceeding the one-per-year limit results in Code Compliance citations. Fines start at $100. Items displayed on sidewalks or rights-of-way may be removed. Illegal signage is subject to immediate removal.
