Miami Beach banned all gasoline-powered leaf blowers effective August 1, 2023, after a phased implementation beginning in February 2022. Only electric or battery-powered leaf blowers are permitted. Fines range from $250 for a first violation to $1,000 for third and subsequent violations within 12 months.
The Miami Beach City Commission unanimously approved the gas-powered leaf blower ban in January 2022 as part of the city's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. Implementation followed a phased approach: a nine-month educational period (February 1 to October 31, 2022), a nine-month warning period (November 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023), and full enforcement beginning August 1, 2023. Only electric or battery-powered leaf blowers are now legal in Miami Beach. The city's Public Works Department and all third-party landscaping contractors working for the city have transitioned to non-gasoline equipment. The city partnered with local hardware stores to offer community discounts on qualifying electric and battery-powered alternatives. Note: Florida's legislature has considered preemption legislation regarding municipal equipment bans, so enforcement status should be verified with the city.
First violation: $250. Second violation within 12 months: $500. Third and subsequent violations within 12 months: $1,000. Report violations to Code Compliance at (305) 604-2489.
