Renton Municipal Code allows occasional garage sales, yard sales, and estate sales at residential properties as an accessory use without requiring a city business license or permit. The city limits sales to no more than three events per calendar year per residence, with each sale lasting a maximum of three consecutive days. Sales must be conducted on the residential property itself and cannot use public rights-of-way, sidewalks, or adjacent vacant lots as the primary selling area. Items sold must be personal household goods owned by the resident, not merchandise purchased for resale which would constitute a retail business requiring commercial zoning. Hours of operation should respect neighborhood quiet with most sales running between 8 AM and 6 PM. Traffic and parking from sales must not block driveways, fire hydrants, or create safety hazards. Garage sale signs are regulated under RMC Title IV sign code with on-premise signs allowed during the sale only. Off-premise directional signs in public rights-of-way are typically prohibited and must be removed immediately after the sale ends.
