Renton requires garbage carts to be stored out of public street view between collection days. Bins left visible in front yards can trigger property maintenance code violations.
Renton property maintenance standards under RMC Title 1 and the International Property Maintenance Code adopted by reference require garbage and recycling carts to be stored out of public view from the street between collection days. Carts may be placed at the curb no earlier than 12 hours before scheduled pickup and must be returned to screened storage areas within 24 hours after collection. Acceptable storage locations include side yards behind gates or fences, inside garages or carports, or screened from street view with landscaping, lattice, or fencing at least as tall as the cart. Leaving bins permanently in front yards or in driveways visible from the public right-of-way can result in code enforcement action starting with a courtesy notice and escalating to civil penalties of $100 or more per violation if not corrected within the stated compliance period. Multi-family dumpsters must be kept within enclosures per zoning requirements. Businesses with commercial dumpsters must maintain them in good repair with lids closed to prevent rodents and odors.
