The City of Vista permits garage and yard sales on residential property without requiring a permit. Each property may hold up to 3 garage sales per calendar year. Each sale may last a maximum of 3 consecutive days. Sales must be conducted entirely on the property β merchandise may not be displayed on sidewalks, driveways extending into the right-of-way, or streets. Operating hours are typically limited to daylight hours (7:00 AM to sunset). All unsold merchandise and sale materials must be removed or stored out of sight at the end of each sale day. Signs advertising the sale must comply with Vista's temporary sign regulations: signs may be displayed on the sale property and up to 2 directional signs may be placed on private property with the owner's permission. Signs may not be placed on public property, utility poles, or in the right-of-way. Sales that exceed the frequency limits or take on a commercial character may be considered an unpermitted business and subject to home business regulations.
Sales exceeding the 3-per-year limit or lasting more than 3 consecutive days may be cited as a code violation. Merchandise displayed on public property or sidewalks may result in a notice of violation. Sales that appear commercial in nature may trigger home business permit requirements. Contact Code Enforcement at (760) 639-6141 for complaints.
