Since July 1, 2025, City of Santa Barbara residents wheel MarBorg carts to the curb for service. Carts must be placed curbside by 6:00 a.m. on the service day (no earlier than the night before) and returned to a storage location on the property by noon the next day. Carts come in 35, 64 and 96 gallon sizes.
The City of Santa Barbara converted its franchised residential collection to automated curbside cart service effective July 1, 2025, with MarBorg Industries exchanging old cans for wheeled carts during May and June 2025. Under the City's curbside rules, residents must 'place your carts (wheeled containers) at the curbside by 6:00 AM, no earlier than the night before,' and 'return the carts to their storage location on your property by noon the following day.' This means carts cannot be stored at the curb between collection days. Residents must 'leave at least one foot (12 inches) of space between each cart and between your carts and any other obstacles (cars, trees, mailboxes, etc.)' and place carts 'with the handles facing your house, so the lids open facing the street.' Lids must fully close, and carts should not be overfilled. Wheeled carts are available in 96, 64, and 35 gallon sizes. Customers who cannot move carts to the curb may pay for in-place service, and a free age-based (80+) or disability-based in-place service waiver is available for those who qualify. The City offered a three-week grace period after July 1, 2025 for enforcement of improper cart placement. Service is started, stopped or changed by calling MarBorg at (805) 963-1852.
After the three-week grace period that began July 1, 2025, the City enforces placement rules and MarBorg may charge for missed pickups caused by improper cart placement. Carts left at the curb past noon the day after collection violate the storage rule.
