Camden County does not regulate vacant lots. Each municipality requires owners to keep vacant and unimproved lots clear of debris, tall grass, and weeds under its own property maintenance ordinance.
Maintenance of vacant and unimproved lots is a municipal responsibility in New Jersey. Under home-rule authority and the Municipal Land Use Law, N.J.S.A. 40:55D, towns adopt ordinances requiring owners to keep lots free of trash, brush, tall grass, and nuisances. Camden County government does not inspect or cite private vacant lots; its planning board reviews only subdivisions and site plans affecting county roads and drainage (N.J.S.A. 40:27-6.2). If a vacant lot in Cherry Hill, Camden, Winslow, or any Camden County town is overgrown or littered, report it to that municipality's code enforcement office, which can order cleanup and bill the owner.
Municipal fines; towns may enter and abate, then lien the cleanup cost against the property.
