City of Lubbock Public Health Department inspects food establishments using Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER). Reports list demerit points for critical and non-critical violations and are posted publicly online.
Lubbock Environmental Health inspectors visit each permitted restaurant, school cafeteria, and mobile food unit at least once or twice yearly under TFER (25 TAC Ch. 228). Inspections score by demerits rather than letter grades. Each violation is weighted, with priority items (cooking temperatures, handwashing, cross-contamination) counted heavier than core items (labeling, light shields). Reports are uploaded to the City inspection portal and patrons may request paper copies on site. Repeat priority violations trigger reinspection in 10 days and possible permit suspension.
Operating without a permit, ignoring reinspection orders, or failing to correct priority violations may bring fines, permit suspension, and forced closure until conditions are remedied.
