The Fairfax County Health Department, operating under the Virginia Department of Health, inspects food establishments using the Virginia Food Regulations (12VAC5-421) based on the FDA Food Code. Inspections occur one to four times annually depending on risk category. Reports list priority and priority-foundation violations and are published on the Health Department website. Unlike Los Angeles or New York, Virginia does not mandate A/B/C letter grades posted at entrances. Repeat critical violations can trigger reinspection, permit suspension, or closure. Operators must hold a valid Health Department permit and a Certified Food Protection Manager onsite.
Operating without a permit, failing reinspection, or refusing entry can lead to closure orders, civil penalties, and revocation of the food establishment permit.
