Utica STR hosts must register with Oneida County before listing on Airbnb, VRBO, Expedia or similar platforms. Registration is currently free; the county-issued registration number must appear in every listing. Utica also requires rental dwellings to be registered and inspected under its city Rental Dwelling Registry.
Under a 2025 New York State authorization, Oneida County created a short-term rental registry. All STR hosts in the county, including Utica, must register before advertising. Registration is free and done through the county portal; the county-issued registration number must be included in all advertisements and online listings. Separately, Utica's own Rental Dwelling Registry Code (Chapter 2-12, Housing Standards) requires residential rental dwelling units to be registered, inspected and certified by the city Codes Department for compliance with the NY State Fire Prevention and Property Maintenance Code before they may be rented.
Hosts who fail to register with the county are prohibited from listing until compliant. Under Utica's city registry, an owner who fails to register may be fined $500 to $1,000 per day of noncompliance per unit.
