Fishers itself imposes no local lodging tax on STRs. Hosts collect Indiana's 7% state sales tax plus Hamilton County's 8% innkeeper's (lodging) tax on stays under 30 days. Any Indiana STR permit fee is capped at $150 by state law (IC 36-1-24-13).
Short-term rental stays in Fishers carry two taxes, neither levied by the City: Indiana's 7% state sales/use tax on lodging and Hamilton County's innkeeper's (lodging) tax. Effective January 1, 2024, the Hamilton County lodging tax is 8% on overnight stays under 30 consecutive days for hotel rooms and vacation rentals by owners, enacted under Hamilton County Ordinance CC 08-02-2023.A pursuant to Indiana Code 6-9-56. Of that 8%, 5% funds tourism marketing/promotion and 3% funds tourism capital improvements. Booking platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo remit the county tax to the State, which forwards it to the Hamilton County Treasurer; direct-booking hosts register and remit through the Indiana Department of Revenue. On the permit side, Indiana Code 36-1-24-13 caps any STR permit fee a unit may charge at $150, so even where a Fishers approval applies, the fee cannot exceed that amount. The City has not published a separate local STR-specific tax.
Failure to collect and remit the 7% state sales tax and 8% Hamilton County innkeeper's tax exposes the host to assessments, penalties and interest from the Indiana Department of Revenue. Charging more than the $150 state-capped permit fee would itself be contrary to IC 36-1-24-13.
