Sacramento County charges 12 percent Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) on all STR stays under 30 days. Operators must register and remit monthly or quarterly.
Sacramento County Code Chapter 3.08 imposes a 12 percent Transient Occupancy Tax on the rent charged to transient guests staying fewer than 30 consecutive days. STR operators must register with the county Finance Department and obtain a TOT certificate. Taxes are collected from guests and remitted monthly or quarterly depending on volume. Airbnb and VRBO have tax collection agreements in some jurisdictions but operators remain responsible for verification. Late remittance incurs 10 percent penalty plus interest. Separate county Tourism Business Improvement District assessments may also apply.
Failure to collect or remit TOT: 10 percent penalty plus 0.5 percent monthly interest. Willful evasion: misdemeanor, back taxes, and permit revocation.
