Temporary garage sale signs in unincorporated San Diego County are subject to the County's general sign regulations. Signs cannot be placed in public rights-of-way or on utility poles. On-property signs for active garage sales are generally permitted.
The County's sign regulations apply to garage sale signs in unincorporated areas. Temporary directional signs for garage sales may not be placed in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, traffic signs, or other public infrastructure. Signs placed on private property with owner permission are generally allowed during the sale period. Signs should be removed promptly after the sale ends. California state law (Business and Professions Code Β§5405.3) allows temporary off-premise directional signs for garage sales under limited conditions. Signs must not obstruct traffic visibility. The County does not require permits for temporary on-property garage sale signs.
Signs in public rights-of-way may be removed by the County. Signs on utility poles may result in citations. Failure to remove signs after the sale may be cited as a nuisance.
