Oceanside, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

The Sign Ordinance, Article 33A of the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance, treats garage sale signs as one of the specifically protected message types a single-family or multi-family residence may display. 1 defines the residential sign envelope: the total display area of all signs on the property, including garage sale signs, real estate signs and protected noncommercial speech, cannot exceed 6 square feet at any time (freestanding signs are measured on all sides, counted separately), and that allowance only grows during the pre-election period, when it may be increased by another 6 square feet.

Article 33A, Section 3303 separately defines a "garage sale sign" as one whose message concerns short-term rummage, estate, boutique or garage sales of used or handmade common household items from a residential property, distinguishing it from commercial advertising, which is expressly prohibited under the same message-types clause. No permit is required for these residential signs unless the sign qualifies as a structure under the Building Code, in which case standard building and safety code review applies. Placement is restricted: signs cannot go on public property, in the public right-of-way, or be mounted on trees or vegetation, and any sign located in a corner clear zone is capped at 30 inches in height and cannot create a traffic sight obstruction or other traffic or pedestrian hazard. There is no numeric cap on how many garage sale signs a resident can post, only on total area.
