San Marcos regulates temporary signs including garage sale signs under SMMC Title 20 sign provisions. Garage sale signs may be placed on the seller's private property and on other private property with the owner's permission during the sale event. Signs must not exceed 6 sq ft. Signs are prohibited in the public right-of-way, on medians, utility poles, traffic signs, and city property. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Directional signs placed off-site on private property with permission must also be removed promptly. Signs must not obstruct pedestrian paths or driver sight distance at intersections. No permit is required for temporary garage sale signs that comply with these standards.
