Vista permits temporary garage sale signs on private property during the sale event. Signs may not be placed on public property, utility poles, or in the right-of-way. Signs must be removed immediately after the sale ends. No more than 2 off-premises directional signs are typically allowed per sale.
The City of Vista regulates garage sale signs as temporary signs under Vista Municipal Code Chapter 18. Signs advertising a garage or yard sale may be displayed on the property where the sale takes place without a permit. Off-premises directional signs pointing to the sale are limited and must not be placed on public property, utility poles, fire hydrants, traffic signs, or within the public right-of-way. Typically, up to 2 off-premises directional signs may be placed on private property (with the property owner's permission) to guide visitors to the sale location. Signs must be removed at the end of each sale day. Signs may not exceed 6 square feet in area. They must not obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic or impede visibility at intersections. The City conducts periodic sweeps to remove illegally placed signs from public property and rights-of-way. Residents should ensure signs are securely posted and will not blow into traffic or cause safety hazards.
Signs placed on public property or in the right-of-way are subject to immediate removal by the City without notice. Property owners who repeatedly violate sign placement rules may receive administrative citations. Fines typically start at $100 for first offenses. Report illegally placed signs to Code Enforcement at (760) 639-6141.
