A garage-sale sign is a temporary sign in Lincoln, allowed in all zoning districts without a permit. In residential districts a temporary sign may not exceed ten square feet of sign area; nonresidential districts allow forty square feet and six feet in height.
Lincoln Municipal Code Section 27.69.100 (Non-illuminated Temporary Signs) covers garage-sale signs as temporary signs. They are allowed in all zoning districts without a permit, subject to district size limits: ten square feet in residential districts; forty square feet and six feet in height in nonresidential districts. The code lists real estate, construction, and noncommercial temporary signs; a garage-sale sign fits the temporary-sign category and must stay within the residential ten-square-foot limit. Signs should not obstruct traffic sightlines or sit in the public right-of-way. Practically, take the sign down promptly after the sale. These rules apply within Lincoln; unincorporated acreages follow the Lancaster County Zoning Resolution.
A garage-sale sign larger than the district limit, or placed in the street right-of-way, may be removed by the city; sign enforcement is handled by Lincoln Building and Safety.
