Indianapolis-Marion County treats garage sale signs as temporary off-premises signs under the Consolidated Zoning Ordinance and Rev. Code Ch. 905 (Rights-of-Way). Signs are limited to approximately 6 square feet. Posting on utility poles, street sign posts, median strips, or in the public right-of-way is prohibited under Rev. Code §905-403 and is subject to immediate removal by DPW. Off-premises directional signs require permission from the private property owner. Signs must be removed within 24 hours of the sale ending. Garage sales themselves are permitted in residential zones up to 3 per parcel per year, each lasting no more than 3 consecutive days.
Signs on utility poles or ROW: removed by DPW, fines up to $100 under Rev. Code §905-403. Signs left after sale: notice and fines $25 to $50 per day. Excessive sales: notice of zoning violation.
