Political signs are allowed on private property in Marion County under the Consolidated Zoning Ordinance with size limits up to 32 square feet in residential zones. Signs in public rights-of-way are prohibited. First Amendment protections apply.
Indianapolis-Marion County regulates political signs through the Consolidated Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance. Temporary signs on private residential property are permitted without a permit up to 32 square feet in aggregate per parcel. Commercial zones allow larger temporary signs. Signs cannot be placed in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, traffic signs, or median strips (Rev. Code Ch. 806 and Ch. 905). Sight-triangle restrictions at intersections apply. Per Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015), Indianapolis does not impose content-based restrictions on political speech and treats political signs the same as other non-commercial temporary signs. Removal is encouraged but not mandated post-election for non-commercial signs.
Signs in right-of-way: removed by DPW without notice. Oversized signs on private property: notice to correct, fines $25 to $500 through DBNS. No mandatory post-election removal penalty for non-commercial signs.
