Bucks County municipalities allow political signs on private property with size limits but cannot regulate content under Reed v. Gilbert. Signs in PennDOT rights-of-way are prohibited. Most townships require removal within 7 to 15 days after the election.
Under Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015), Bucks County municipalities cannot impose content-based restrictions on political signs that differ from other temporary signs. Most townships including Northampton, Warwick, Warrington, and Buckingham allow political signs on private property up to 6 square feet in residential zones and up to 32 square feet in commercial zones. Signs in the state right-of-way (PennDOT-maintained roads such as U.S. 1, PA 611, PA 413) are subject to removal under 36 P.S. Β§2718.101. Signs on utility poles and traffic sign posts are banned. Most municipalities require removal within 7 to 15 days after the election. Yard signs do not require permits. Candidate committees remain responsible for sign removal even when placed by supporters.
Signs in state or municipal right-of-way: removed by PennDOT or township without notice; no fine typical. Oversized signs on private property: zoning notice with correction period. Failure to remove post-election: fines $25 to $100 per sign after grace period expires.
