Anchorage has no ordinance restricting plastic straws or stirrers. Restaurants may freely provide plastic straws, although many local cafes voluntarily switched to paper or compostable alternatives following the 2018 Climate Action Plan dialogue.
Unlike California's straw-on-request law (AB 1884) or Washington's Seattle ban, neither Alaska nor Anchorage has restricted plastic straws or stirrers at food service businesses. The Anchorage Climate Action Plan (2019) listed single-use plastics as a category for voluntary reduction, and the Anchorage Park Foundation and several neighborhood compacts have promoted straw-free programs. Federal ADA accessibility considerations (which delayed many mainland straw bans) have not been a factor here because no ban exists. Restaurants serving takeout still apply the AMC Title 26 plastic bag fee to carryout bags but face no straw-specific obligation.
No ordinance violations apply specifically to plastic straws. General litter and stormwater rules under AMC Title 26 still cover discarded straws as solid waste.
