Recycling is voluntary in Anchorage. SWS offers opt-in curbside recycling for an additional monthly fee. The Anchorage Recycling Center accepts free drop-off of paper, cardboard, plastics 1 and 2, and aluminum.
Anchorage has no mandatory recycling ordinance. Solid Waste Services operates an optional curbside recycling program for Municipal customers at an extra 9 to 12 dollars per month, collected every other week in a blue 96-gallon cart. Accepted materials include mixed paper, cardboard (flattened), aluminum and tin cans, and plastic bottles and jugs marked 1 or 2. Glass is not collected curbside but is accepted at the Central Transfer Station glass recycling point. The Anchorage Recycling Center (ARC) at 6161 Rosewood Street accepts commingled recyclables free during operating hours. Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) runs seasonal pull-tab and aluminum-can drives. There is no state bottle bill. Commercial recycling is available through private haulers including Waste Connections and Denali Disposal.
