Solid Waste Services provides curbside trash collection weekly in the Anchorage Bowl. Bear-resistant containers are required during bear season due to active bear and moose populations.
The Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services division (AMC Title 26) collects residential trash weekly using municipal-issued roll-carts. Set-out time is before 7:00 AM on the scheduled collection day, and empty carts must be retrieved from the curb by the end of the pickup day. AMC 17.20 and Assembly Ordinance AO 2009-82 require trash to be stored in bear-resistant containers or kept in a secure garage or enclosure between April 1 and October 31 when bears are active. Putting trash out the night before pickup is prohibited in bear-conflict zones such as Hillside, Rabbit Creek, Eagle River, and much of East Anchorage. Solid Waste Services issues bear-resistant carts on request. Missed pickups can be reported via the SWS mobile app or 311.
First offense educational warning; repeat violations of the bear-attractant rule carry fines up to 300 dollars per AMC 17.20.090. Repeat offenders may lose curbside service.
