Anchorage, AK Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Anchorage runs its own municipal hauler, Solid Waste Services (SWS), and its fee schedule at AMC 26.70.060 treats bulky waste as an add-on charge rather than a free curbside service. Customers on the standard can-or-bag plan who set out large items beyond their weekly limit are billed under subsection B.2.a: $2.50 for each extra can or bag, and for larger bulk items the current disposal charge based on cubic yardage, with a minimum of one cubic yard, set by AMC 26.80.050A.2 and A.3. Customers on SWS's automated roll-cart routes fall under subsection B.3.i instead: excess or oversized refuse costs $12.50 per pickup plus whichever is greater, $2.50 per bag or can, or the volume-based disposal rate, again with a one-cubic-yard minimum.

Subsection B.3.j addresses items too big to fit inside the cart: refuse that protrudes above the rim so the lid cannot close, or that is stacked on top of the lid, is billed as excess pickup under B.3.a's additional-volume charge. The same subsection gives the collection operator discretion to refuse service outright: SWS may decline to empty any overfilled container that, in the operator's sole opinion, cannot be emptied safely without spilling refuse onto the ground. There is no free annual bulk cleanup day written into this chapter; every extra item is billed individually, and residents who need a large item hauled must either pay the per-pickup and volume charges through SWS or haul the item themselves to a transfer station or the Anchorage Regional Landfill, where separate tipping fees under AMC 26.80.050 apply.
