Anchorage has not adopted a polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) ban for food service containers. Restaurants and retailers may legally use foam clamshells and cups, though MOA has encouraged voluntary alternatives through its Climate Action Plan.
Unlike Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, or many other Pacific cities, Anchorage has not enacted an expanded polystyrene foam ban. The Anchorage 2019 Climate Action Plan flagged single-use foam as a target for voluntary reduction, but no ordinance has been passed. Alaska has no statewide foam ban or preemption. Foam containers are accepted in regular trash but are not recyclable through MOA Solid Waste curbside or transfer stations. The Anchorage Recycling Center accepts clean block foam at limited drop events. Businesses considering compostable alternatives can take advantage of MOA composting pilots in select neighborhoods.
There are no current AMC violations specific to polystyrene foam use; standard solid waste and litter rules under AMC Title 26 still apply for improperly discarded foam.
